Chinese Studies Series: Business Essentials and your Gateway to China


A report released by the Development Research Centre of China's State Council predicts China will maintain around 8% annual GDP growth rate from 2006 to 2010, and will reach around 2.3 trillion US dollars at the end of 2010. The annual GDP growth rate from 2010 to 2020 will still maintain an average of 7%. The vast domestic market and great growth potential, the improved investment environment, and the international competitive power of its manufacturing industry are all factors which attract foreign investors in the China market.

No matter you are working for a corporate or you are running your own business, there are increasing chances that you have to build up business relations with Chinese corporates and establish strong networks with Chinese people. Most western people feedback that even they have excellent Chinese language skills or even have years of experience staying in China, they still find it difficult to get into the Chinese social circle. Commercial business management courses, which are specially designed for entering the China market, are not able to help too much neither. Why? The answer is simple. What you lack is CULTURE?

Chinese writings have been existing for over 5000 years; China passed through 24 dynasties, and therefore, both the country and the Chinese people are deeply affected by the history, philosophies, religions and traditions, etc. All these factors adding up lead to an unique and distinctive business environment of the China market, or in other words, a Chinese Culture Based Market.

This Chinese Studies Series contain various modules which are specifically designed to help western people to acquire more comprehensive knowledge in both Chinese and China. Apart from some hard knowledge such as the government structure, taxation and legal systems, business environment, modules on Chinese philosophies and psychology, entertainment, geography and metaphysics are added. These modules convey to you the principles and practical substances on top of theoretical knowledge. It is regarded as the short-cut gateway to prepare for entering the China market and the Chinese business environment.

Module 1 Introduction to the Government of People's Republic of China - Understand who gets the Real Authority

Abstract:
The first thing to understand a country and the people of such country is to understand the structure of the government. So, the first module of this gateway to China is an introduction to the government of the PRC. We shall discuss the centres of authority of Mainland and the two SARs. In particular, and most important, the correct way to understand the ranking of authority of officials of the Chinese Government will be discussed so that you can tell who will be the boss of whom and who will be able to make the decision. Without knowing who can approve and disapprove what you are going to do, you cannot earn an easy life.

Next, we are going to address your main goal, i.e. to do business in China . In this module, you will be highlighted the overall economy and latest developments of commerce in the country. At the same time, elements and factors that are essential to good business activities will be discussed, such as the procedures to start up a company, to do auditing and accounting, to deal with the banks for mortgage and the normal contractual arrangements etc.

Abstract:
The People's Republic of China adopts a very complicated system of taxation. It is important to understand the whole system before you are able to do a good business in the country. Otherwise, you will easily be sued by the government. National and local items of taxation will be discussed. The whole procedures of filing tax returns and estimating amount of tax payment will be highlighted. The ultimate aim is to teach you how to keep what you earn in China and how to transfer such profit back to the U.S.A. or invest further into other business activities.

Module 4 Introduction to Chinese Philosophy, Psychology and Metaphysics - How to understand you business associates and friends in China?

Abstract:
The civilization of a race or the people of a country directly and significantly influence the ways of living, decision making, the values and ethics of the people. And that has a strong impact on how you would deal with the people to conduct successful business activities. Chinese has been greatly influenced by three schools of thought, namely Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. We shall look at them from an introductory point of view. Then, you can easily judge the form of value of Chinese, which is strongly related to the psychological behaviour. It is so important for you to understand what makes a Chinese feel happy, successful, superior, sad and guilty etc. and to understand how a Chinese evaluate his/her friends, partners, boss and subordinates etc. Trust is the most important element for Chinese to deal with others and the meaning of trust is to be explained.

China has a very long history of over 5000 years while the ancient civilisation of China was mainly based on the Taoism School of Thought. Taoism starts with Tao, i.e. the Way. From the Way, Yin and Yang are branched out, followed by the creation of the eight Trigrams. From them, the ten Heavenly Stems and the twelve Earthly Branches can be created. From these onwards, all Chinese calendars, orientations, fortune telling and the harmony with the natural environment can be derived. All these can be included in the School of Metaphysics of China . The most important topics of metaphysics will be highlighted. When you get a chance to talk to a Chinese, there should be at least one topic in which you can raise his or her interest. That may be the quickest and easiest route to make a Chinese friend.

Module 5 Entertainment in China - 1 - Cuisine - How to make friends efficiently in China?

Abstract:
Entertainment and enjoyment in China are wonderful. There are so many varieties at your choice, including sight-seeing, world famous scenic spots, food, wine, knitting, antique, accommodation, transportation, night life, you name it. The first topic covered in this series is FOOD. There are eight famous types of cuisines. Their presentable dishes, ways of cooking and their distinctive features will be discussed. Furthermore, the normal table manner and services provided by famous restaurants will also be highlighted. Why are they important? For example, Chinese enjoy meals around a round table and each seat has a different rank or meaning. You should take different seats based on your role in the party, say the chief guest, common guests, the chief host or the companion. This is just the first module of the series bearing the same name.
